A Driverless Metro System to Be Developed in Innopolis
Transmashholding and LocoTech-Signal are opening a Center of Competence for driverless technologies in the special economic zone Innopolis: RailNext will be developing a complex CTRL@TRAFFIC system for driverless trains in the Kazan Metro.
Today, RailNext received its resident status in Innopolis and approved its project at the meeting of the Supervisory Board of the Special Economic Zone Innopolis chaired by the President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov.
The project provides for a modernization of the existing communication, train operation, and safety systems as well as the rolling stock currently in operation, and the deployment of new systems to solve tasks directly related to the arrangement of driverless train operation.
The new components of the CTRL@TRAFFIC will be mostly developed by RailNext’s specialists in Innopolis together with partner companies.
The driverless metro trains will be able to reach a maximum speed of 90 km/h with a total number of trains up to 40 train pairs per hour. Apart from Kazan, the driverless train system may be implemented in other cities using Transmashholding rolling stock in the future.
The driverless metro project in Kazan will be the first in Russia; today, it has no analogs in the country. “It is an ambitious task to upgrade the subway infrastructure and part of the rolling stock as well as to develop a control system for driverless train movement in 2021. In 2022, we will be able to put the entire system in trial operation. If the results are positive, it will be possible to further upgrade the rest of the rolling stock,” said RailNext General Director Bulat Shafigullin.
